Always awesome names in Newfoundland

Always awesome names in Newfoundland

We were fortunate enough to be able to get a destination wedding under our belt this summer: Newfoundland! (Cortney and Corey, your photos look awesome and I can't wait to publish them!) Heading South from St Anthony (we just had to see L'Anse aux Meadows) we were in amazement at the beauty of the rugged Northern Pennisnula.

We had just finished shooting a wedding in Port Aux Choix, but it seemed that the entire province was meant for weddings. We were determined to find a great wedding venue. Where else to start looking other than Gros Morne?

We came across the Fishermans Landing Inn, as anyone who comes through the park is bound to do. This place is awesome. It's located in Rocky Harbour, and for any of you who have never had the absolute pleasure of experiencing Gros Morne, it's pretty much the most beautiful little town in Canada, (at least top 5!) (sorry Mahone Bay!) Think Jasper, Banff, Canmore. That kind of beauty.

So we pull up and unload the kids. The really awesome thing about this hotel is that some of the rooms have both inside & outside access. I mean that some of the rooms actually have doors to their own kind of back deck! There is also a covered hot tub, which is just the perfect thing pre, post, or even during the wedding! (why not? We've seen some crazy stuff!)

We were greeted at the front desk by the owner as well as the manager, talk about guest service! The beautiful vaulted lobby is covered with incredible art by local as well as international artists. Wood carvings, painting, even a patchwork piece showcasing the beauty of Gros Morne! Connected to the lobby here is an attached restaurant as well as gift shop.

Let me tell you about the reception area. One of the most challenging things as a photographer, particularly event photography, and even more particularly wedding photography is dealing with the often atrocious lighting conditions (think dimly lit churches and dark reception halls.) Of course we have no problem working in poor lightning conditions, but good lighting conditions can really make photographs shine. This reception hall may be the most well lit reception hall I've ever come across. I'm talking basically floor to ceiling windows with Southern exposure on both sides (ok, maybe that's not possible and the Southern exposure is only on one side, but it feels like it's coming through both sides of the building at once!) It's big too, when I was there I was told the wedding they were preparing for was going to accommodate upwards of 180 people. Not many reception venues will accommodate that many people and leave so much room for activities!

Seriously though, check out Gros Morne, check out Rocky Harbour, and definitely check out Fishermans Landing Inn.
